About Me
I was born and raised in Stockton, where I grew up in an incredibly diverse community. Although I love and appreciate the community of Stockton, it was not a community that made it easy to pursue higher education. College did not seem possible for me, as it felt so out of reach. Both myself and many of my peers are first-generation college students. Like many first-generation college students, we had to navigate the college process on our own. I personally felt lost with the college process, I felt as though I was not worthy of pursuing a college degree. Looking back, the person I was before Chico State would have never believed where I am today.
I am currently studying English Education, along with a Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) certificate. I will finish my undergraduate schooling a year early (in the Spring of 2019), where I will then go on to pursue my single subject teaching credential in English. It is a hope of mine to complete my credential program and teach in my hometown of Stockton, California so that I may give back to the community that helped shaped me. It is here where I hope I can encourage students to pursue a higher education.
Experiences that have molded me in my time here at Chico state include working as a writing tutor at the Student Learning Center and the English Second Language Resource (ESL) Center. I have also worked as a mentor in a rhetoric course. It is a great joy of mine to meet new students every day and help them not only improve their writing skills, but to give them confidence to overcome the challenges they face in their schooling. I have loved my work in both centers and as a mentor, as I can apply all that I have learned in my courses to reinforce my passion for linguistics and future teaching practices.
As I am getting closer to graduating, it is comforting to look back at my experiences at Chico State and know that I am closer than ever to my future goals!
